What is it that makes animal migration such a magnificent spectacle? Is it the steep odds to be overcome? Is it the amazing feats of precise navigation? The sheer numbers all moving in the same direction with the same goal in mind, or simply the reward that awaits those who make it to the end? The answer is all of the above. And, as you cross some of Botswana’s most remote and vastly contrasting Zebra, Elephant and Wildebeest migration routes, the Plains Adventure Rally gives you the chance to experience this amazing spectacle for yourself.

In an epic new migration of man (women) and machine, every rider and driver will face the challenge of having to traverse large distances. More than 700km in fact! A 1-of-a-kind adventure over 4 days, navigating through Mophane forests, thick Maun sand, along the flooding Boteti River, and all in the midst of an abundance of wild life. Your longest day takes you across the Ntwetwe Salt Pan in the Makgadikgadi, where you will chase down distant mirages as you cover approximately 200km. But don’t fret, there is also a period of blissful respite, where you can enjoy an 80km Makgadikgadi National Park liaison section.

Thankfully, unlike the animals that need to keep moving constantly, you will reach a well-deserved rest point every day. Some incredible locations and lodges where we have some amazing activities planned.

But, let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves and go back to where it all starts. We will kickstart the Plains Adventure Rally ‘migration’ with a fire and light show put on by the Magic Bean Theatre Company in the bar area of Audi Camp.

This is where you can find out more on Audi Camp

Participants will begin an epic 140km bush trek to Boteti River Camp

Then, guided by GPS or roadbook, participants will begin an epic 140km bush trek to Boteti River Camp. You may have had the adventure of a lifetime already, but to ensure everyone gets equal value, your family, or you and your family, can take a self-drive safari into the Makgadikgadi National Park. It is also possible to go with Boteti River Camp’s Safari vehicle at an additional cost.

an unpredictable journey across the pans

Where you get to join a human-tolerant meerkat family as they go about their daily business.

The next part of the adventure takes you on an unpredictable journey across the pans to the renowned Planet Baobab lodge. Families who follow the support crew will not miss out on the fun and will have an opportunity to ride on the pan as well. Those who choose to stay at the lodge will be rewarded with two free must-do activities. The first is the Baobab Trek, where you will follow a guide on your bike to all the different, significant baobabs in the area and learn their ancient stories. The second, is the well-documented Meerkat Experience, where you get to join a human-tolerant meerkat family as they go about their daily business. If you are really lucky and they like you, they may even rub up against your body, which is an amazing experience that the kids will certainly love.

Then, if you still simply can’t get enough of the incredible Makgadikgadi, you can take a ride down and spend a little more time out on the pans.

An Unpredictable Journey Across the Salt Pans

Planet Baobab is one of the places where your family can join in on all the activities, so if they cannot make the long roundtrip from Maun back to Maun, they should definitely consider meeting you here with their bikes, so they can join in on all these amazing experiences….so awesome and special. There is also a special evening of laid-back live music planned. This will certainly set the ambience for that fire burning story telling atmosphere.

Like all migrations, the journey is not a one way affair. Having enjoyed the spoils of an epic adventure, the journey must head back to where it all started.

After an unforgettable stopover at Planet Baobab some may already feel a little adventured out, but just like an actual migration, the reward of what awaits further ahead is worth continuing on. The next leg of the journey is a special one and takes us to the private concession, Leopard Plains. A truly  beautiful place, where the leopards are often seen near the camp along with the hyena. Thanks to a ‘biker-friendly’ owner, the activity for the family here is a once-off 30km loop that partners/children can join in on the riding experience. The venue speaks for itself, which is why we have kept the activities to a minimum here. Take the unique 30km ride and then just soak up the very best that nature has to offer. And lookout for those leopards.

Like all migrations, the journey is not a one way affair. Having enjoyed the spoils of an epic adventure, the journey must head back to where it all started. Arriving at the finish line at the Audi Camp back in Maun, we will celebrate the success of memorable adventure with a closing ceremony and the sharing of stories from the epic journey.

The Plains Adventure Rally is not a race. It is an adventure for individuals, couples, friends, or the whole family. Whether you are on a dirt bike, adventure bike, quad bike, rally bike, side-by-side or even in a standard 4×4 packed with a bunch of mates, this rally is for you. For those who want to feel that Dakar Rally experience and take on the challenge with a roadbook, this is the perfect opportunity to do so under no time, or race pressure. For those who feel the adventure is already challenging enough, you can simply use a GPS. It’s completely up to you. A special briefing every morning will also help to outline exactly what lies ahead for competitors and support crews.

For extra piece of mind, each vehicle will get a tracking unit that is connected via satellite. This allows us to keep a track of everyone’s location and make sure all get to camp safely each day. It should be noted that we do have a full medical back up.

There is also a team of support vehicles sponsored by Motor Holdings Botswana and a fuel carrier sponsored by Tswana Fuels, that will move on main roads to each stopover location. Family members not taking part in the actual rally can follow the support train to each new location.

When it comes to accommodation, people can choose between self-camping, mobile cabins (like the ones we use for our Moonlight event), or comfortable lodges/huts/luxury tents. If you choose to stay in the lodges, your meals are included, which is an amazing offer.

There are very limited spaces available for this adventure of a lifetime. If you are the type of person who accumulates wealth through experiences, then don’t hesitate, book now! A treasure chest of unforgettable memories awaits you.
