THE VAST NOTHINGNESS
WHERE IN THE WORLD?
Where in the world can you ride your dirt bike at night and still have a shadow close beside you in the middle of the night. There is only one place – The Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, Botswana.
Fondly known as Moonlight, this event is a dirt bike and music festival on the remote and vast nothingness landscape of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, in Botswana.
At this year’s edition, we will spare no expense on both the music festival side of the event and the Freestyle Motocross Shows.
We have curated an incredible lineup of artists from various genres to ensure that there is something for everyone at the music festival. Additionally, the Freestyle Motocross Shows will feature some of the most talented riders in Southern Africa, performing jaw-dropping stunts that will leave the audience in awe.Â
The event is dubbed as a “dirt biker’s dream event” where riders can ride their bike further than the eye can see – they will run out of fuel before they run out of space to ride! And get this, riding takes place at night under the full moon, with the pans reflecting the moonlight in shades of blue hue – no lights needed.
18 - 21 July 2024
The event starts with camp setup on 18th July 2024. Activities start on 19th July and run all day and all night until 21st July 2024.
Freestyle Motocross Show
Back flips, knack-knacks, heel clickers, whips, heart attacks; all in our Freestyle Motocross Show at sunset on both evenings in the great Makgadikgadi Pans. No better way to enjoy the sunset.
Jam In The Pan
This year’s music line-up includes, Sunset Sweatshop, Flying Bantu, So Kindly and Fifi Afrika to name but a few. DJ Witchdokta will take it from, keeping you dancing till the morning sun!

Booking this activity in advance is essential, as there are limited spaces/slots available.
Fire Dancing
When you have all the space in the world…you’ve got to fire dance to the unforgettable jam of the drums and what better way to mesmerise you the guest; than with fire. These shows take place on both nights.
Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, Botswana
The site is only identified after we have been able to scout the pans for the best possible site. Our favourite site is just past Mokubilo.
Guided Trails
Tour up Kaitshe Escarpment and along part of the historical Makgadikgadi Heritage Trail. This is a rather technical route and requires a 4×4 if you are not going on a bike.
Interactive Drumming
Ever thought of beating an African drum and creating a cool, unforgettable beat in the middle of the Makgadikgadi Salts Pans. With the vast space echoing your tune back to you!Â
Quad Bike Hire
Don’t have a bike? Hire a quad bike at Moonlight and take a ride across the largest salt pan in the world! Quad bikes are hired out by a vendor at the event and can only be booked and paid for at the event, you cannot pre-book this activity.
Spectator Competition
There’s always something about a race that gets the public going and Moonlight is not short of that either! The Oval Race, Wheelie Competition and of course the must anticipated Night Enduro-Cross are another highlight.
